Reconfirm before booking

The lighthouse authority's history page does not publish a verified visitor timetable, ticket price or current permission to climb. Confirm the exact access offered.

Minicoy’s historic lighthouse gives an island visit a focus beyond the beach. Start by identifying the right landmark: the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, or DGLL, lists Minicoy South Lighthouse and DGPS Station separately from Minicoy North Lighthouse.

The historic southern lighthouse

According to the DGLL history1, work began with a foundation-stone ceremony in May 1883. Materials and lighting equipment were brought by ship, and the lighthouse was formally inaugurated on 2 February 1885.

Its administrative history continued well after Indian independence. DGLL records the transfer ceremony to India in April 1956 and the later legal transfer in September 1963. Those are different events, not competing inauguration dates.

This is useful context for a visit: the landmark is part of a long maritime history, rather than simply a viewpoint for a photograph. The official record also traces subsequent changes to its lighting and navigation equipment.

Do not confuse it with Minicoy North

DGLL has a separate Minicoy North record2. If a map pin or itinerary just says “Minicoy lighthouse”, ask the organiser to specify which one.

Use the full southern-station name when the 1885 landmark is what you want to see. This helps avoid building a visit around a similarly named navigation site.

Opening hours, fees and climbing

The primary pages reviewed did not establish current visitor hours, entry charges, a bookable tour or permission to climb the tower. No step count or guaranteed viewing experience is given here.

Ask for a clear description of access: seeing the lighthouse from outside, entering its grounds and climbing inside are three different proposals. Also ask about photography rules and the physical demands of whichever access is actually permitted.

If a tower climb is essential to the trip, resolve that point before booking the island visit. If it is optional, plan around the landmark’s history without treating interior access as certain.

Fit the landmark into a Minicoy visit

The Administration’s island profile3 identifies the lighthouse alongside village and beach interests. It does not give you a current door-to-door sightseeing circuit.

Ask the organiser to show the lighthouse stop within the time you will actually have ashore. Avoid a minute-by-minute plan assembled from distances alone. Leave village visits respectful and specific: a community building or home is not automatically open to tourists.

Read the Minicoy island guide for the wider setting and the beaches guide to compare holiday styles. For a different kind of sightseeing, Kavaratti offers a separate research path around architecture and its listed aquarium and museum, not an assumed same-day connection.
