Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep — Weather by Month

When to visit Lakshadweep: weather, sea conditions, diving visibility, and what to expect by month. October–April is peak; monsoon shuts almost everything.

Lakshadweep has one of the sharpest-edged travel seasons in India. Most destinations give you a rough guide — “October to March is best” — and leave it at that. Lakshadweep’s difference between best and worst months is larger than almost anywhere else because the monsoon here isn’t just rain, it’s the Indian Ocean southwest monsoon, which shuts down transport, diving, snorkelling, and effectively tourism itself.

So here’s the honest month-by-month, based on multiple visits and talking to operators who’ve worked every season.

October

Early October is marginal. The southwest monsoon officially ends mid-October but the sea takes another week or two to settle. Flights resume from the first of the month but run irregularly. Dive operators open around the third week.

Late October is genuinely good. Water has cleared. Temperatures sit 28-31°C. Accommodation availability is excellent because the crowds haven’t returned. I’ve had entire beaches to myself in late October.

Visibility: 20-28 metres by mid-month, improving. Sea state: 0.5-1.5 metre swell, moderate.

November

Solid. Weather has stabilised. Pre-peak pricing still applies in the first half. Flights on schedule. All resorts open. Dive conditions excellent.

My pick month if I had to name one — it’s the sweet spot between accessibility and crowds.

Visibility: 25-32 metres. Sea: calm to moderate. Temperatures: 27-30°C.

December

Peak season begins mid-December. Christmas and New Year blocks see the highest prices of the year, especially at Bangaram. Book Bangaram by August or forget about it.

Weather remains excellent. Dive visibility often maxes out. Flights run reliably but book ahead.

Visibility: 28-35 metres. Sea: calm. Temperatures: 25-29°C.

January

Peak in every dimension. Prices, crowds, demand all at annual maximum. Water is at its clearest. Every operator is running full bookings.

If budget matters, January is the month to avoid. If water clarity is the only thing that matters, January is the month to target.

Visibility: 30-35 metres. Sea: calm. Temperatures: 23-28°C.

February

The best month overall, in my view. Crowds ease slightly from January’s peak. Weather stays pristine. Prices drop 15-20% from January’s top rates. Diving conditions remain excellent.

If someone asked me “when should I go on my one Lakshadweep trip”, I’d say February.

Visibility: 30-35 metres. Sea: calm. Temperatures: 24-29°C.

March

Still very good. Mid-March brings slightly warmer temperatures but visibility stays high. Pre-summer pricing starts to appear. Most honeymooners have left; diver bookings are back in season after the holiday rush.

Visibility: 28-34 metres. Sea: calm to moderate. Temperatures: 26-31°C.

April

The last strong month. Heat picks up noticeably. Afternoons can hit 33°C. Pre-monsoon showers start appearing, sometimes heavy, though the sea is generally still calm.

Good value month — prices drop further, availability improves, conditions remain good for most activities. Diving is fine if you don’t mind occasional post-rain turbidity.

Visibility: 22-30 metres. Sea: moderate. Temperatures: 27-33°C.

May

Shoulder. Heat is serious now — 30-34°C with high humidity. Pre-monsoon showers become more frequent and can last hours. Some operators start wrapping up the season in the last week of May.

If you can handle heat, May is the cheapest month with conditions still allowing activities. If you can’t, skip it.

Visibility: 18-26 metres. Sea: moderate to rough by end of month. Temperatures: 29-34°C.

June through September — monsoon

Don’t plan a trip here in these months. Flights cancel frequently. Ships don’t run most routes. Resorts close — Bangaram shuts entirely, Agatti Beach Resort operates a skeleton operation. Diving visibility drops below 10 metres on bad days. The sea is dangerous for casual swimming.

If you absolutely must come in monsoon (family emergency, research deadline), fly only, stay only at Agatti, and bring zero expectations about activities. You’ll experience Lakshadweep the way its residents do, which is educational but not a holiday.

Visibility in monsoon: 5-15 metres. Sea: rough. Temperatures: 24-28°C, often with heavy rain.

What to pick based on what you want

Diving: December through February. Water clarity is non-negotiable for serious diving and this window delivers it.

Honeymoon: November or early December — romance without peak-season chaos, excellent weather.

Family with kids: November or February. Good weather, less extreme heat, no monsoon uncertainty.

Budget: late October or early April. Decent conditions, significantly lower pricing.

Photography: late January through mid-March. Light quality is best in the cooler months and the lagoons photograph well.

First-time visitor: February. It’s the default correct answer.

The one thing nobody should do: try to save money by coming in May or September on the theory that rates are lowest. You’ll save 30% and lose 80% of what you came for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the single best month to visit Lakshadweep?

February. Water clarity is at its peak, the sea is calm, temperatures sit in the 26–30°C range, rain is rare. December-January are almost as good but significantly more crowded and expensive.

Can I visit during monsoon?

Technically yes, practically no. June through September brings heavy rain, rough seas, and unreliable flights. Most resorts close. SPORTS ships don't run many routes. Even if you get there, diving and snorkelling visibility collapses.

Is May a good time?

Shoulder. Water is still reasonable, heat picks up, pre-monsoon showers start. Flights and accommodation are cheaper than peak months. Acceptable if you can handle 33°C afternoons.

What about October?

Early October can still be marginal; the sea doesn't fully settle until mid-month. By late October it's solid. I'd target last week of October onwards for the start of the real season.

Which month has the best diving visibility?

January and February. Visibility consistently runs 25–35 metres. March and April are nearly as good. After a heavy April shower visibility can temporarily drop to 15 metres, which sounds bad but is still better than most dive destinations globally.
